Standing around chatting and waiting
Just as they did so often in the past.
Medals and Banners proudly displayed,
The elderly assembled to pay their respects.
The sun shone brightly enhancing the day.
Then into the circle solemnly marched
Two lines of children in red uniforms,
Each one so pleased to be part of the remembering.
Their faces set in serious concentration
As they formed a semi-circle on front of the gates.
All wearing their poppies with pride.
Then as they bowed their heads in respect
I thought of those names on the pillars,
How pleased they would be to know that
The young had not forgotten them.
Now when I stop and think of those who fell,
I will also remember the solemn young people
Who shared those minutes at Cae Glass Gates.
