For want of better days

I dreamt oft we two had our lives set fair,
Until in fate you were then lost to me…
So far from home…so far across the sea…
And I awoke with you no longer there.
I see you in the waters deep and cold…
I see you in the shadows dark and long…
I hear your voice in sunset’s plaintive song…
I ache…in me your memory I hold.

On such beloved thoughts of you I weep,
To think of you oft-times…long since asleep.
And every mournful waking dawn I pray
To bear my grief…as I did yesterday.
Though, reason makes for me to ask not…‘why?’
But contemplate my cares with just…a sigh.
