Rows of names gouged from granite
Stand erect in faraway places
However poignant the reminder,
Continue to fight oppression.
Tattered and torn flags
Denote smoke-damaged ownership
On broken poles
Half hidden amongst rubble.
Adorned wooden crosses,
Stars and other symbols
Share the same earth
Brothers from the same side.
Posthumous medals hang
Close to a dead chest
Return to the elements
A sealed and silent heart.
Thought, word and deed
Freedom, lures achievement
Crimson melts white snow
Lest we forget.
