Just a Memory

A handsome blue-eyed soldier in uniform so fine,
Boots burnished up with polish
Black as steam coal from a mine,
Creases in his trousers, oh so keenly pressed
Buttons made of shining brass
Buffed up to impress.
A handsome blue-eyed soldier
Walks toward me for a kiss,
Hands outstretched to greet me,
But he never does quite meet me,
For he fades away completely
In a swirling, thick grey mist.
