With danger at the doorway
We hear the bugle sound
Just like the call to arms before
They rally all around
The soldiers and the sailors
The airman in the sky
They answer to the country’s call
But never asking “why?”
The kit is readied as before
The weapons oiled and clean
The men are trained and eager
For dangers yet unseen
“Once more into the breech, my friends”
As the ancient poem goes
Again to death and danger
To face the country’s foes
They say that we are heroes
A credit to our race
Without understanding
The horrors that we face
From Kosovo to Darfur
From Basra to the Falls
Who will help the heroes
When the final bugle calls
We fight for Queen and Country
Bretheren, one and all
But none can feel the pain like us
When we see a comrade fall
The politicians sing our praise
But never understand
That all we ask is fairness
From our own Motherland
The blinding flash
The sudden jolt
That takes a limb away
The nightmares that we all endure
Our every waking day
We ask not that you praise us
Or call us heroes all
But merely that you help us
When the final bugles call
From Helmund Province
To Goose Green
Their duty they have done
But who will help the heroes
When the battles all are won.
From Kosovo to Darfur
From Basra to the Falls
Who will help the heroes
When the final bugle calls
