BUT DEATH REMAINED THE SAME

There must have been a hundred more
Than I could ever name
Where battles raged and victories won
But death remained the same

There must have been ten thousand souls
All lost without a name
And telegrams sent from the King
But death remained the same

There must have been a thousand miles
Of trenches made the same
All full of mud and freezing cold
But death remained the same

For each man killed a thousand more
Were called and so they came
To fill the gaps left at the front
But death remained the same

A thousand thousand more were lost
And no-one took the blame
But claimed instead a victory
And death remained the same
