You want to know all that happened…
What happened on the day your father died.
You want to know what happened to him…
What I know about the day your father died.
I will tell you all about what happened…
I will tell you what had come to pass.
Of all that had happened
On the day your father died.
The sunlight had flickered and then it faded…
It flickered again and then it faded.
Until finally it then went out…
And it never again returned.
The sunlight was bright then it went out…
And it never has returned again.
That’s what happened
On the day your father died.
The moonlight shone and then it dimmed…
It shone again and then it was dimmed…
Until it went away for good….
And the moon…it was coldly darkened.
The moonlight was so cold bedimmed…
And the moon itself became so dark.
That’s what happened
On the day your father died.
The stars had twinkled but then they fled…
They fled the heavenly firmament.
They had twinkled so brightly above…
But then they left the lofty heavens.
They had twinkled once so brightly…
But from the heavens they have now fled.
That’s what happened
On the day your father died.
The rivers they had strongly flowed…
But they are not now strong and flow no more.
They had grown mighty from the streams…
And flowed so strongly down to the sea.
Once the rivers had so strongly flowed …
But then they were stilled and no more flowed.
That’s what happened
On the day your father died.
The tides they were high and then they fell…
They were high again and then they fell…
They fell to nothing…and then they were gone…
And alas they were never high again.
Once they were high…but then they fell…
And they were high never again.
That’s what happened
On the day your father died.
The mountains they rose and were then laid low…
They rose again and were again laid low.
They were wasted and then laid so low
And never again did they rise.
The mountains they were laid so low…
And then they did not rise again.
That’s what happened
On the day your father died.
The birds they sang and then they were silent…
They sang so sweetly and now they are silent.
So sweet with pleasure was their song…
But now there is only a deathly silence.
The birds they once sang so sweetly…
But they are silent and they are no longer heard.
That’s what happened
On the day your father died.
I was there when your father died.
I saw your father fall on the day he died.
I was there with him and saw him fall…
O! I saw him and he could not stand…
He had fallen so hard that he could not stand…
And I watched with dread when he had fallen.
That’s what happened
On the day your father died.
I held out my arms and I reached for him…
Yes! With my arms I reached for him.
But he was weakened…he became so weak…
I felt him weaken when I held him close.
And I knew then he had weakened fast…
O! Though I had I held him tight.
That’s what happened
On the day your father died.
Your father held on but then slipped away.
He tried to hold on but he slipped away.
He lost his hold…his hold on me…
And then he was gone…and he was no more.
He lost his hold…O! He lost his hold.
And then he slipped slowly away from me.
That’s what happened
On the day your father died.
And when he had gone then I was lost.
I was so lost…and I could not be found.
And I knew not then just who I was…
And I was not where I should have been.
I was lost and I could not be found…
And I was somewhere…but yet…nowhere.
That’s what happened
On the day your father died.
And all of us we grieved for him…
We grieved so much when he was gone.
And all our tears were bitterly shed…
So dreadful with the cry of our pain.
He was gone from us…gone from us…
And we wept bitterly with our pain.
And that is all that had happened
On the day your father died.
