Not since the wartime, when I was just a kid,
When Jerry came a calling and in the shelter we hid,
Now, since the pandemic, I’ve written poems by the score,
I’ve come to the conclusion, that I’m not proud or sore.
I’m going into battle, with all my poems ablaze,
Repeat the glory of those Battle of Britain days,
Honour those flying aces, Bader and Malan,
By writing lots of verses, as many as I can.
I too served Queen and country in uniform of blue,
Maybe not in wartime, though I know what to do,
Although now an old man far beyond my prime,
I know what I must do to fill my remaining time.
Carry on regardless, write poems every day,
Since the Covid war it’s been my way,,
I do my best to support ‘the few’
Those who put ‘likes’ and ‘hearts too.
Write a short story here and there,
Just so I can clear the air,
Put down my history in verse,
Don’t let things get any worse.
Victory, I feel is in my grasp,
Write poems till my last gasp,
Don’t worry if they’re ‘liked’ or not,
As long as I give them my best shot.
‘The few’ have won the day,
I’ll write my words, I’m gonna stay,
I salute you all, my faithful ‘few’;
And wish the very best for you.
They say the pen is mightier than the sword,
Is that true? Then, my good Lord,
I’ll become a hero in my time
By writing poetry, line by line.
