Back from Iraq

My friend, the dark has taken you –
Wrapped your mind, soul. And your
beautiful body and hart is stung
into past traumatic paralysis.

I feel your fear and taste your tear
and touch your dead living limb
and blink when you dive for cover.
You cant see me and I cant reach you.

But I’m here, right next to you,
taking every step alongside, thinking
it is my turn to guide you
toward the light in my eyes again.

The guns and bombs are far away.
But I know in your mind’s eye
they will forever stay, along with
the remains and smell of hell.
