I saw an Angel, standing near
My bedpost one dark night,
When I first set my eyes on her,
She was such a wondrous sight.
She then smiled at me so softly
And caressed my furrowed brow,
She spoke in a tongue so strange to me
But I understood her; anyhow.
“Do not be troubled,” my Angel said,
“I am by your side tonight,
Because you’ll need my comfort
Before the sun is up and bright,”
At this, I felt such calm and peace
I even raised a smile,
For I felt such love and comfort,
That I had not felt for such a while.
With that the door burst open,
The Devil himself, was standing there
But with my Angle by my side,
I did not seem to have a care.
The Devil looked me in the eye
But he couldn’t see my fear,
For there was not a glimpse of it,
With my Angel standing near.
The Devil, he just cursed at me
Then turned and ran away,
Shouting as he left my room
That, ‘he’d be back another day.’
I asked my Angel, “Why the Devil wanted me?
Were my sins so bad?”
The reply she gave, lifted up my heart
And made me feel so glad.
“No my child, you have not sinned,
There is no such sin in you,
For God Himself, put you too the test
To see if your heart was true.”
“Now close your eyes and go to sleep,
Sleep peacefully my dear,
For I am here, by your side
And will always be right here.”
So I closed my eye’s and was soon asleep
Knowing my Angel, she was near.
My love of God was tested
And I knew there was nothing for me to fear.
Now each time the Devil comes
To take my soul away,
I cast him over too one side
And tell him that, he need not stay!
For now my love of God’s been tested
A test, I passed with pride
For I now have no fear of evil
With my Angel by my side.
Now every morning that I wake
I say, “Hello,” to her.
I then pass my day contented
Without a single care
At the end of day, when it time to sleep
I say, “goodnight my Angle dear.”
I then sleep, the whole night through
As I no longer have to fear.
For now my Angel’s near to me
I know that God is near as well,
I fear no more, my time to die,
As I will not end up in hell.
