I LIED ABOUT ME AGE…

I lied about me age Mam, really sorry Dad
Wanted to be a soldier, make you proud of your wee lad
I lied about me age Dad to the sergeant at the Hall
He just said sign here son, and line up against that wall

I lied about me age Mam, but there were plenty more
One said he was fifteen, but could pass for twenty four
I lied about me age Dad, like Nick and Bert and Tom
Now we’re fighting side by side at a place they call The Somme

I lied about me age Mam, at times I wish I’d not
Lying in this stinking mud, seeing friends and foe get shot
I lied about me age Dad, am I destined to die young?
Did I hear an answer, as deadly shrapnel pierced my lung?

I lied about me age Mam, but to the medics told the truth
The only thing the doctors saw was another wounded youth
We lost Nick and Bert and Tom, which makes me very sad
No need to lie about me age now, back home with Mam and Dad
