It will always haunt me

In my bed at night
Sometimes I take fright
Sometimes I want to fight
I wake my wife from her slumber
As I shout out my army number

I awake with a start
Always with a racing heart
The adrenalin rush
As my wife says hush

My brow is wet with sweat
I try not to fret
But you can bet
The sheets are soaked with sweat

I have been back to that place
Where men are no longer part of the human race
It’s hard to picture a face
This nightmare is gathering pace

My wife now knows to leave me be
For it is only me
Stuck with this memory
But it will always haunt me
