Sign of the Times

Gun and knife crime on the rise
No one can give the reasons why
The only excuses that come to mind
This is the sign of the times

No longer do youngsters settle playground scuffs
With kicks and brawls and fisticuffs
Today’s revenge is cruel and unkind
This is the sign of the times

Emergency services can’t do their jobs
For fear of attack from disorderly yobs
Their parents don’t bother to keep them in line
This is the sign of the times

Gangs of youths shooting each other
Just because they’re not a ‘brother’
Another dead body the police now find
This is the sign of the times

Old folk being beaten by vicious thugs
Just for the sake of money for drugs
The punishment too soft for this awful crime
This is the sign of the times

Weekend revellers getting their thrills
From shots of booze and illegal pills
Police stand by watching for trouble in lines
This is the sign of the times

Illegal immigrants smuggling wares
For parasites that do not care
Paying their price for ‘better lives’
This is the sign of the times

Terrorists planning evil deeds
Killing infidels through religious needs
Extremists have twisted their simple minds
This is the sign of the times

Soldiers posted out to war
Trying to bring peace for civilians once more
Our soldiers are injured and dying from mines
This is the sign of the times

We shouldn’t have to live our life?
In a world that accepts such terrible strife
If we each take a stand, and find peace of mind
Maybe we can change this sign of the times
